September 2007

Back in September 2007 I was a new Vancouver resident and didn't really know my way around the city. In fact, I had only been there a handful of days when I attempted to take the bus from South Surrey/White Rock back to Vancouver. I had been visiting my aunt and uncle for the night. Anyway, I ended up having a horrible experience trying to get on the bus in South Surrey but I managed to make my way back to Vancouver. I then managed to miss my bus stop so I walked 9 blocks back to where I needed to be. 9 proper city blocks. Ugh. So there I was at the corner of 49th and Granville. My phone was dead so I didn't know what time it was nor did I know when a bus would appear. There is a girl at the bus stop as well so I attempt to ask her if she knew whether the bus I was looking for had come yet or when I might expect it or I dunno, what time is it??? She actually just stood there staring straight ahead. I kid you not. She did not want to even acknowledge my presence. If she couldn't understand english, there was no mistaking that I was talking to her so she could have given me shoulder shrugging or bewildered eyes or whatever but nope, nothing. She didn't want to acknowledge me. I ended up waving my hand in front of her face going "hello, are you there??" and FINALLY she looked at me. She just said "no it hasn't come yet". It was pretty awful considering I had only been there a few days in this big, massive city that I really didn't know.

I took from that day, that I was always going to be friendly and nice to everyone and be as helpful as I could be, even if I didn't know much at all. I would go out of my way to help people who needed it, regardless of who they are or whether I would ever see them again. That girl was just plain rude and sadly, she's the one that will suffer long term because her parents obviously didn't teach her very well. It willl translate over into the workplace and be her downfall. Karma, it gets you.

Hello, BC

Am I the only one who tears up a little when she sees the Hello, BC commercial? Yes? Oh, nevermind then........

Things to do

Elle is planning.

Once I get a paying job, my goal is to try to do a little travelling. I'm hoping the following places will be on the list over the next 12 months:

-Edmonton (to visit one of my many bff's, her hubby, and her brand new baby)(hopefully this can happen in February. Crossing my fingers REALLY REALLY hard. Postponement to March would make me sad BUT would still make me happy happy.
-Summerland, BC - Hello, Okanagan valley. Amazing views. Amazing Wine. Need I say more?? Oh, and another BFF and her baby girl (who is growing up toooooo fast!!! 2? How did that happen)
-Vancouver - So pretty in the spring/early summer. Not so much November to March. Also, I want to show the boy how much better Vancouver is over Toronto (even if I've never been there)
-Toronto - the boy is supposed to show me how much better TO is over Van. We'll see.
-Halifax - Work related goal (yes yes, what work? We shall see....)
-Calgary/Banff - Also work related but possibly more feasible work related thing.

Yes, I realize this includes no cities outside of Canda but that's okay. This is a 12 month goal not a 2 or 5 year goal. Long term would obviously include destinations such as ummm, somewhere hot like Mexico, Australia, the UK, and maybe Germany since I have this fascination I can't explain (since I was in High School) and the boy happens to actually be from there (even if he can't actually remember living there, haha).

Reminiscing

Whenever I see photos of Vancouver (or BC even) I get a little misty eyed. Especially with the lead up to the Games. I won't be there for them and that was what had brought me out there in the first place. I don't have any regret about leaving the Games, I really don't. It was the right thing to do for me at the time but still, I can feel a bit misty eyed, right? I hope that's okay.

I really don't have any desire to live in Vancouver for the rest of my life. I just simply don't. I think it was a fabulous experience for me to have lived there, and for two years at that. But I just don't feel like it's the place where I want to settle down (plus, I just can't get used to all the rain). But I do hope that I get to visit there a lot. And I hope that when I have kids, I can take them there all the time to visit this fantastic city. It definitely stole a piece of my heart that I will not get back. And I don't want it back. I'm okay with Vancouver having that piece.

I wish I had a photo (and I'm sure I do somewhere and I just can't find it right now) of the view of downtown from the Burrard or Granville Street bridge at night. EVERYTIME I drove over those bridges at night I just couldn't help but choke up a little and just feel in awe of the beauty that is a big city. A big city on the West Coast. Just stunning. I'm a little misty eyed sitting here thinking about it.
